Director's Message

Dear Fellow Alumni:

As we begin our 132nd year of serving the state of Texas, my very best wishes are with you and your family. Now that your fun filled summer days are gone by, I trust that your Fall plans will include a visit with us here at Prairie View A&M University. The Fall is always an exciting time at the University. New facilities, new residence halls, new faculty, and new students with dreams that add a special tone to the opening of a new academic year. I am proud of PVAMU’s long history of welcoming students who would not otherwise have an opportunity to reach for college. Our pool of freshmen for the 2008-2009 academic year are an impressive group with the tough mindedness to tackle the rigors of a demanding educational program. The caliber of our students and the rich diversity of experiences they bring with them help shape a strong environment for teaching and learning. We welcome our new students and wish them good luck throughout their college career.

Recently, our own David Brewer L. Brewer III, Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent and alumnus of PVAMU delivered the keynote address for our Faculty/Staff Conference at the Houston Marriott Westchase Hotel.  Brewer‘s powerful and enlightening address focused upon the pressing needs of society’s urban youth and the implications for institutions of higher education. We applaud Superintendent Brewer for his outstanding accomplishments in public education. During Labor Classic weekend (PVAMU Panthers vs. Texas Southern University Tigers), we were treated to a wonderful gala evening prior to the annual match up between the PVAMU Panthers and the Texas Southern University Tigers. Hosted by the Houston Alumni Chapter, a number of Prairie View graduates were recognized for their contributions in the fields of education, government, athletics, and for the founding of the national Buffalo Soldiers Museum in Houston, Texas. During the gala, alumnus Christopher Sanderson challenged alumni to “Re-claim, Recruit and to Re-connect” to their alma mater.

As you might know, the Angel City Classic (PVAMU Panthers vs. the Morehouse Tigers) will take place in Los Angeles on September 27th. This event promises to be an exciting one with a plethora of scheduled weekend   events. Several of our prominent and distinguished graduates in the Los Angeles area will be engaged with the university in promoting the work that we do at Prairie View A&M University.

On the eve of the State Fair Classic (October 3rd), former students and friends of the university will gather for the Dallas Alumni Chapter’s 13th annual Athletic Scholarship Gala. The football classic (PVAMU Panthers vs. the Grambling State University---- will be witnessed by thousands on Saturday, October 4th at the Cotton Bowl. The following week will find all of us celebrating homecoming on Saturday   October 11th when The PVAMU Panthers will host rivals the Alabama State Hornets at Blackshear Field. As a part of homecoming week, our golden anniversary class, the class of 1958, will play a vital role in a number of festivities in recognition of their 50th year as former students of the university. Look for the homecoming schedule on the Alumni website, www.pvamu.edu and click on Alumni

We value our relationship with you. It is our sincere hope that you will continue to support our great programs and work to ensure Prairie View’s legacy in higher education.
